Critical Mechanical Infrastructure

Underground Chilled-Water Supply & Return for a National Telecommunications Facility

A representative underground piping project involving large-diameter chilled-water supply and return lines, constrained access and extensive field welding below grade.

Project Overview

The project required installation of an underground chilled-water supply and return system serving a major telecommunications facility. The work combined large-diameter piping, excavation sequencing, below-grade fit-up and field welds performed under restricted access conditions.

The customer identity and precise facility location are intentionally withheld. Dimensions and quantities shown here are draft values for layout development and must be validated before publication as a completed PennWelding™ project.

The Challenge
  • Coordinate long underground pipe runs with excavation and civil activities.
  • Maintain alignment, slope and joint accessibility within a trench environment.
  • Execute more than 72 field welds at depth while controlling fit-up and quality.
  • Sequence work around a schedule-driven critical-facility project.
  • Protect completed piping prior to backfill and final turnover.
Our Approach

PennWelding™ organized the work around field verification, weld sequencing and repeatable joint preparation. Pipe sections were staged to support efficient trench installation, with fit-up and welding coordinated to limit unnecessary handling and preserve access for inspection.

  • Reviewed drawings, routing and tie-in conditions.
  • Coordinated pipe staging with trench progress.
  • Established a repeatable fit-up and weld sequence.
  • Performed field welding at depth using project-appropriate procedures.
  • Supported inspection, punch-list and turnover activities.
Execution & Project Controls

Field Execution

Work was sequenced to maintain safe access, productive welding positions and coordination with adjacent trades. Joint progression was planned to reduce congestion within the trench.

Quality

Fit-up, weld preparation and visual acceptance were managed consistently across a high number of field joints, with project-specific inspection requirements incorporated into the workflow.

Schedule

Daily production was coordinated with excavation, pipe delivery and backfill activities so the mechanical scope remained aligned with the broader construction schedule.
